No. 5 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) got revenge in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship beating No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), 35-7. The Braves won the regular season meeting, 28-0. The win for the Monarchs gave them their fourth CIF Southern Section Division 1 title since 2017. They will face No. 24 Serra (San Mateo, Calif.) in the CIF Open Division state championship on Dec. 9.
Abduall Sanders started the scoring for the Monarchs with a 52-yard pick six in the first quarter. Jordon Davison extended the lead for Mater Dei with a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make it 14-0. Elijah Brown connected with Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for a 44-yard score with 3:51 in the third. Caleb Sanchez found four-star linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa for an acrobatic 17-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-7 late in the third.
After a muffed punt early in the fourth, the Monarchs capitalized as Brown found 315-pound defensive lineman Tomu Topui who was lined up at fullback for a 14-yard touchdown on a pass in the flat to give Mater Dei a 28-7 lead. Alabama-bound cornerback Zabien Brown iced the game on Bosco’s next play from scrimmage with a 12-yard pick six to make it 35-7 with 8:47 remaining.
No. 13 Norland (Miami) and No. 25 Central (Miami) faced off in Florida’s 2M quarterfinals and it was another classic battle. Norland erased a 20-0 halftime deficit in the regular season and pulled out a 29-26 win in overtime. This time around the Rockets erased a 28-7 second half deficit and scored the final 21 points in regulation to force overtime. Miami Central fumbled on its opening possession in OT and Noah Sidan connected on a 27-yard field goal to pull out a 31-28 win to advance to the 2M semifinals.
No. 12 Walton (Marietta.) and No. 17 Carrollton squared off in a MaxPreps Top 25 matchup in the Georgia AAAAAAA quarterfinals. The Raiders offense was in cruise control and rolled to a 56-35 win. Up next is Camden County (Kingsland) in the semifinals after they beat No. 8 Mill Creek (Hoschton). They upset the defending state champs, 39-20.
There were plenty of upsets in Georgia’s AAAAAAA quarterfinal bracket. No. 11 Colquitt County (Moultrie) and No. 16 Buford both got eliminated. Milton handed the Packers their first loss of the season with a 39-37 victory and Grayson (Loganville) took down the Wolves 19-14.
No. 1 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) looked impressive in its final game of the season with an emphatic 56-11 win over Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) in the Class 5A Division I state championship. Four-star Miami commit Elija Lofton finished the game with two receiving touchdowns, a rushing score, and a touchdown pass. Senior quarterback Micah Alejado accounted for four total touchdowns. He went into halftime completing 13 of 16 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. The Gaels have won 13 of the last 14 state titles in Nevada’s largest classification.
No. 7 DeSoto (Texas) won its 19th straight game handing Willis (Texas) its first loss of the season with a 65-31 win. After the game was tied at 17 halfway through the second quarter, the Eagles outscored the Wildkats 38-14. DeSoto has won every game by at least 14 points this season and will face either Cedar Hill or Tomball in the UIL 6A Division 2 quarterfinals.
No. 6 North Shore (Houston) dominated a red-hot Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas) squad cruising to a 45-9 win to advance to the UIL 6A Division 1 quarterfinals. They will face either Atascocita (Humble) or Lamar (Houston).
