Matai Fuiava is transferring from No. 2 St. John Bosco, allowing the Braves to play rookie quarterback Koa Malau’ulu.

Junior had thrown for 1,155 yards and 13 touchdowns but has moved on to Hawaii powerhouse Kahuku.

Junior quarterback Matai Fuiava has transferred from No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) to Kahuku (Hawaii), as reported by Greg Biggins of 247Sports.

Bosco’s coach, Jason Negro, revealed to the Los Angeles Times that he found out about the transfer on Monday through X (formerly known as Twitter).

This transition comes at a notable time for both St. John Bosco and Kahuku.

Fuiava played in six games for Bosco this season, completing 72 of 116 passes for 1,155 yards and 13 touchdowns. He shared playing time with freshman Koa Malau’ulu, who has passed for 588 yards and nine touchdowns.

Fuiava began for the Braves in a 13-0 defensive win over Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita). Bosco scored twice in the fourth quarter, the first on a blocked punt, and Malau’ulu clinched the victory with a 33-yard touchdown run only minutes later.

St. John Bosco (7-0) is currently in Trinity League action and will face No. 19 Servite at SoFi Stadium on Friday. After that, they might face Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) as the No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown on October 25.

Kahuku (6-3) will play its regular-season finale versus Campbell (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), the state’s top-ranked team, with Fuiava projected to be eligible.

Two of Kahuku’s losses came against national powerhouses Mater Dei and No. 5 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.). However, the three-time defending Division I state champion also suffered a 14-10 defeat to Mililani last month.

Quarterback duties for Kahuku have been shared this season between Kalaheo Kanae-Oliveira, Christian Sanford-Tupuola, and Troy Mariteragi.
